HOUMA — Ellender scored 16 of the game’s first 17 pointsand used its full-court press defense to help slow down H.L. Bourgeois in a 105-49 nondistrict victory in the regular-season opener for both schools Monday.

The Patriots (1-0) started the game on an 11-0 run and led by as many as 58 in the final period. Ellender’s offensive outburst even caused the scoreboard atop the east side of the Patriots’ home court to start from zero once the team eclipsed 100 points.

They did that with three minutes still left in the game.

Trevon Lewis led the Patriots with 21 points and Chaz Williams added 12.

Mutual Respect

Link to Story

Jerel Russo remembers Josh Guilbeau as an eighth-grader playing varsity basketball at Catholic High School in the mid-1980s.

The Assembly Christian School boys’ basketball coach is still impressed with his former player, now in his first year as head coach for his alma mater.

“I have tremendous respect for Josh,” said Russo. “He was a tremendous player. In eighth grade he played varsity for me at Catholic High.”

Guilbeau said it was nice to reminisce with his former coach. Guilbeau was an assistant coach at CHS last year.

“I got to talk to Coach Russo a lot,” he said. “It’s nice to go up against your friends and mentors. I respect him for what he’s done here at Assembly.”

Both coaches got a kick out of working against each other on Monday when their teams met at ACS.

The homestanding Lions pulled out a 50-45 win, scoring the game’s last 7 points, in Catholic High’s season opener. The Panthers are missing several key players, who are currently on the football team and preparing for a second-round playoff game.

“I really don’t think of it too much once the game starts,” said Russo.

“It’s actually more of a thrill for me than I imagined.”

“It was a lot of fun,” said Guilbeau.

Class C Assembly Christian Upsets 3A Catholic High New Iberia

BY CHRIS LANDRY

The Daily Iberian

Assembly Christian School took full advantage of its two-month head start on basketball, and Catholic High’s continued presence in the LHSAA football playoffs, to beat the Panthers 50-45 Monday night in a non-district boys’ basketball game at Assembly.

After a see-saw fourth quarter that saw nine lead changes, and three tied scores, ACS (5-3) scored the game’s final 7 points, 4 following steals and 3 on free throws, to pull away. Catholic High fell to 0-1 in its season opener.

“I’m not going to sugarcoat it,” said ACS coach Jerel Russo. “I realize these guys have a lot of football players out. We know if they come fully loaded it’s going to be a completely different game. We’re just fortunate we have a two-month jump and are able to prepare.”

Many of Catholic High’s starters and top subs are on the football team, which is currently preparing for its second-round playoff game against Bogalusa, a game scheduled for Friday at CHS. The Panthers beat West Feliciana 35-33 in the bi-district round.

“It’s great our football program is still winning,” said first-year Catholic High coach Josh Guilbeau. “We hope they keep on doing that.”

But having so many players out gives a lot of younger players a chance to get in some varsity work, he said.

“We had some trouble taking care of the basketball a little bit,” Guilbeau said. “I’m expecting that with a lot of young guys. Give a lot of credit to Assembly Christian. They gave us trouble with the trap.”

Southwest Daily News

Sulphur, La. -

SULPHUR–When the Sulphur Tor basketball team begins the 2009-2010 today at home against Carencro there will be plenty of familiar faces. That is because the Tors return everyone from last year’s team that reached the Class 5A regional round and went 25-13.

"We are looking forward to it," head coach Clint LeBato said. "Our guys had a good summer.

"I think that they enjoy being together and are looking forward to the challenge that they have ahead of them. They know about the players and the other teams that we have to play and they are looking forward to it. It should be a good year if they keep their heads straight and keep working hard."

Four starters return this year in guards Chip Armelin and Matt LeBato and forwards Donovan Williams and Aaron Cupit. Sulphur has had their full team at practice for just over a week with the football season ending recently.

Iota tops Church Point in season opener

Iota’s Brett Broussard goes up for a layup
Monday in the Bulldogs’ 69-55 victory over
Church Point. Broussard poured in
 a game-high 22 points in the victory.

IOTA – When Troy Harmon took over the Iota boys’ basketball program two years ago, he inherited a squad that was averaging about three victories a season.

Harmon’s main goal at the time was simple - change the way people looked at Iota boys’ basketball.

In 2008, the Bulldogs responded with seven victories in Harmon’s first year.

“One thing we’ve been talking about for two years is trying to get some respect,” said Harmon. “We don’t want to be thought of as a stepping stone. We want teams to know that if they come to Iota, they are going to have to play to win. You’re going to have to work for every bucket you get.”

The Church Point Bears found that out the hard way Monday in the 2009 season opener at Iota’s Bulldog gym.

The Bears kept it close throughout the contest before Iota went on a 12-5 run in the final three minutes to claim a 69-55 victory.

“We really played hard tonight,” said Harmon, whose squad clung to a 28-27 lead at the break. “It was back and forth early on and when we went to the half, I told the kids we were going to keep doing what we were doing. We just had to try and outlast them.”

The game remained tight throughout the third quarter and early in the fourth when Church Point cut the lead to 49-46 with just over six minutes remaining.

Iota broke the game open after that, outscoring the Bears 12-2 over the next three minutes to take a 61-48 cushion.

“They had a big man who kept hitting threes in the corner so we kept trying to cut the lanes to stop him from getting the ball,” said Harmon. “And their big man in the middle, once he got tired, we had them.”

Iota’s Brett Broussard led all scorers on the night with 22 points. Brennan Miller added 21. Also contributing for the winners were Daniel Scott, who chipped in 10 points to go along with four blocked shots, Tyler Leblanc with 11 points and Johnny Guidry with five.

Church Point was led by freshman center Dexter Charles and guard Devante Malveaux. Charles poured in 18 points in the paint while Malveaux drained three 3-pointers. Tyrone Alexander added 10 points.

Iota will be in action again tonight when they take on Crowley High at 6 o’clock in the second round of the Kaplan Tournament.

Bastrop Season Preview: Better Days Ahead for Rams

By Marq Mitcham

Trey Baldwin and the Bastrop Rams open the season
at home Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. against Ouachita Christian.

BASTROP -

For Bastrop High, Tuesday night’s regular season basketball opener against Ouachita Christian serves a two-fold purpose.

Besides the excitement of tipping off a new season, the 7:30 p.m. home contest affords the Rams the opportunity to mercifully close the book on a forgettable 4-20 showing for good.

As bad as last year was, it wasn’t like the dropoff was unexpected.

“It was just one of those years that you go through every now and then. We graduated everybody that played any amount of time the year before,” coach David Patrick said. “Basically, we played a varsity schedule with a JV team.”
