Tioga High rolls past Bolton 94-31 in prep basketball season opener

Tioga Senior Rodney Williams

TIOGA -- Tioga High flashed some brilliance, and Bolton High struggled mightily in Tioga's 94-31 victory in the season-opening high school basketball game for both boys teams Tuesday night.

Tioga scored the game's first 10 points, raced to a 45-14 lead at the half and played its third string for most of the fourth period.

"They wanted to score 100, but I didn't want us to score 100," said Tioga coach Gene Wright, who freely substituted throughout the contest as the Indians spread the scoring among 15 different players.

Senior guard Matt Thorne led the way with 20 points, and seniors Rodney Williams and Jamie Arnett each tossed in 10 points.

59th Annual Wedge Keyes Tournament

Zachary Sophomore Morris Wright

The state's longest running high school basketball tournament will have a little bit of a twist this season. The annual event that is typically held at Baker High since the tournaments beginning in 1960 will move to Zachary High for the 2009 version. Baker High will still host the event but will not be using their gym due to repairs on the roof. This years tournament features a lot of players that are under the radar that nobody really knows about. The best players could possibly both be sophomores in Morris Wright of Zachary and Keith Broome of Tara. Wright is a silky smooth guard that can flat score the basketball and will be able to show that ability with former Zachary players Mason Leggett and Phillip Carey gone due to graduation. Broome is a small, shifty guard that can shoot the 3 and handle the ball. He is a very good compliment to senior Joe Kirk of Tara.  Another player to watch is Ed Brown of Baker who is coming off a 36 point outburst against Belaire on Monday night. Teams in this tournament are host Baker, Zachary, Tara, Belaire, Northeast and St. Helena Central.

Schedule at Zachary High:

Zachary vs. Northeast, 5:30 p.m.
Tara vs. Baker, 7 p.m.

Players to Watch:

Zachary- Morris Wright 5'11" PG Sophomore
Baker- Edward Brown 6'2" G Senior
Tara- Joe Kirk 6'3" G Senior
Tara- Keith Broome G Sophomore
Belaire- Dorian Copeland 6'3" Senior

Other tournaments of Note:

East Iberville will be hosting their annual Robert Grace Invitational. Pointe Coupee Central is the only team other then East. Iberville that I know of that will be there.

Port Allen will also be hosting a tournament this week as well. Two other teams besides the host that I know for sure that will be there are Class C Family Christian and Brusly.

Defending 4A State Champion Salmen falls to Chalmette

By Bill Turner
Staff writer

The gym is the same, still temporary looking with a new gym, a huge monolith to Spartans basketball, growing silently beside it.

But there's something different at Salmen.

On the walls, the difference is evident. On one beige wall up high is a large glossy photo of the 2008-09 basketball team, looking down on this year's version. On the opposite wall is a banner with the names of last season's team, like a moment out of Hoosiers, names of those who created history for Salmen by winning the Class 4A state basketball championship.
But Tuesday night -- when the Spartans lost 44-42 to Chalmette -- the march toward the same old goal, a state title, began again.

The differences extended to the team, where R.J. Scott and Jared Harrison and Isiah Tate and Daron Populist and even Daniel Sams and Matthew Sumpter no longer work the baseline or prowl the post or hit those long jumpers for a 33-2 team whose two losses were within 30 hours of each other last December.

But things are different by rule. Each year is fresh.

Former D-1 Ambassadors Player William Nelson Scores 38, BRCC Wins

One of my former players from the Louisiana D-1 Ambassadors/Texas D-1 Ambassadors William Nelson, who is a former Port Allen High Pelican scored 38 points last night as Baton Rouge Community College won 94-82 in a home game vs. Southwest Mississippi Community College last night. Nelson played his high school ball at Port Allen under current Zachary Head Coach Kirby Loupe, after Port Allen he played for my former high school coach Steve Rachal at Acadian Prep in Opelousas. As a junior, Nelson led Port Allen to a semi-final loss to Richwood High. After spending the entire summer working and training Will I am very happy to see how his hardwork that we put in is really paying. Whether it was the 6 a.m. weight room training with former LSU football star Trev Faulk or the 2-A-days in the gym that would start a 7:30 A.M. and 5:00 p.m. Will has shown the hardwork and dedication it takes to be a great player. He is finally seeing what it takes to be successful and has accepted the challenge. After playing for my team in the Spring, Will traveled the summer for our Texas D-1 Ambassadors team of Max Ivany which featured current University of Memphis freshman Dalenta "DJ" Stephens,  rivals 100 player and Texas A&M signee Daniel Alexander from Dripping Springs, TX, Oklahoma State signee Brian Williams from Baton Rouge, Northern Colorado signee Paul Garnica of San Antonio(who is on his way to breaking the Texas state record for points in a career), Univ. of San Fransisco signee Cody Doolin from Austin, TX, Ronald McGhee of Baton Rouge, and one of the top juniors in Louisiana Tre' Drye from Glen Oaks. Through playing with Max, Will got a lot of exposure throughout the country, whether it was at the Univ. of Texas Elite camp, or the trip up to Kansas for the Hoop City Classic, Myrtle Beach, SC for the Big Shots National Invite tourney, the River City Showdown in Memphis, or the Desert Duel in Phoenix, AZ, Nelson made an impact.

I don't know everybody's story but if you all knew the personal stuff that this young man has been through it would truly touch your heart. This young man is one of the best that I have been around. Sure he can give a little attitude or show frustration on the court, but at the end of the day he is a great young man that will be very successful after his stint at BRCC. So with that said, Will good luck and congratulations on a successful start to your college career so far and leading BRCC to a 5-1 start being the face of a first year program at BRCC. You are truly doing well.

Bossier takes on Favorite's role

Bossier High School Junior Guard
Jalan West(below) looks to lead Bossier
By Jason Pugh • jpugh@gannett.com • November 17, 2009

Bossier Bearkats boys basketball coach Jeremiah Williams used the power of the underdog to propel his team's run to the Class 4A championship game in March.

As the 2009-10 high school basketball season begins in earnest tonight, Williams won't have that piece of motivation for his team. In this area, the Bearkats are much more favorite than little engine that could.

"We've got to learn to play as the hunted instead of trying to hunt somebody," Williams said. "We've got to get used to playing that role. We're used to being the underdogs, people saying we're too small and we're not supposed to win. Now people are expecting us to win."

Old Reserve players mesh with new team

Tuesday, November 17, 2009 By JJ Marshall Contributing writer

After the first foul was called in the first quarter of Monday's game between Riverside and Covington, the Riverside public address announcer announced, "Foul on Reserve Christian's Cedric Jenkins. His first personal foul, first on Reserve."

After Reserve Christian shut down last year, the acclaimed basketball program migrated down the street to Riverside Academy. Coach Tim Byrd, Reserve's former coach, now is in charge of the entire Riverside athletic department.

Riverside's varsity basketball team now has 13 players from Reserve, and five remaining from last year's program.
