DeRidder beats Barbe on Tuesday
DeRidder, La. -
DERIDDER—The DeRidder Dragons (1-0) won their season opener against Barbe by a score of 66-53 Tuesday night.
“I’m excited that we were able to win,” Dragons head coach Mike Greene said. “We did it by committee and it would take 10 guys in and out and they contributed. Everybody scored and everybody played good team defense. I was pleased with that.”
Greene said there are things the Dragons have to get better at, but it went well considering the team had one full practice together. He noted the Dragons had too many turnovers.
“I just thought that we had a great team effort on both ends,” Greene said. “We were able to beat a good team in Barbe, but we’ve got a big game Friday night against Fairview we’ve got to get ready for.
“It’s great to be 1-0. Just got to take them one at a time.”
For the Dragons, Raimon Gates scored 13 points, Sean Freeman scored 11 points, JoDarius Jones scored nine points, Dwain Conway scored nine points, Tre O’Banion scored seven points, Charles Lewis scored five points, Rashad Robinson scored five points, LA Sanders scored four points and Ryan Greene scored three points. Rosepine Defeats Merryville
MERRYVILLE—The Rosepine Eagles (1-0) won the season opener on the road against the Merryville Panthers (0-1) Tuesday night by having five players score in double figures. Rosepine won 98-42.
Julius Jackson scored 24 for Rosepine, Richard Palmer scored 20 points for the Eagles, Ethan Calcote scored 13 points for the Eagles and Tyler Thompson scored 12 points for the Eagles.
Jason Allardyce scored 10 points for the Eagles.
For the Panthers, John Hobbs scored 17 points, Garrett Riggs scored eight points and Jaylen Brandon scored seven points.
“It was typical of what I expected,” Panthers head coach Rory Hollier said.
However, Hollier said things would be better when several players come back. That includes sophomore Caleb Branch, who injured his hand and should be back at around Thanksgiving.
“We’ll be OK come January. We’re not in basketball shape now,” Hollier said.
Hollier said the Panthers have 16 kids on varsity, but right now just four seniors and four freshmen suit up in uniform.
“We’ve got to get in shape. We started the same way last year,” Hollier said, noting the Panthers started 1-5 last year, but eventually won around 16 games in a row, finished 27-10 and won the 4-1A District.
“We’ll be OK when we get down the road,” Hollier said, adding the Panthers just have to get in shape.”
“I wasn’t disappointed. The kids played hard even though we got beat by 56,” Hollier said, noting the things the Panthers did wrong were correctable.
“When we settled down we did a decent job at times.”
Merryville and Rosepine are both back in action at 8 p.m. Thursday when they face one another in the Rosepine Tournament.

EAST BEAUREGARD 47,
SINGER 38
Five 3-pointers by Cody Johnson helped the East Beauregard Trojans (1-0) win their season opener on the road against the Singer Hornets (6-6) Tuesday night. East Beauregard won 47-38. The Trojans had a 21-18 halftime lead, but Johnson hit three 3-pointers in the third quarter to help break the game open for the Trojans. Corey Townsley also made a 3-pointer for the Trojans in the third quarter. Cody Massie helped keep Singer in the game with 17 points. Eleven of those points came in the fourth quarter on the strength of three 3-pointers. But the shooting was the difference. Singer was 8-for-28 from the field with 2-point field goal attempts. Townsley had eight rebounds, Justin Rutherford had five assists for the Trojans and Jared Cooley collected three steals for East Beauregard.
“It’s a win,” Trojans head coach Alan Reeves said. “Nothing wrong with starting 1-0.
“Cody Johnson stepped up and made some big 3’s for us.”
Reeves said the two teams played a similar style, but the Trojans were able to hit a few more shots than the Hornets.
“We just didn’t shoot the basketball,” Hornets head coach Shane Thibodeaux said. “They had good defense. They had a hand on our shooter. They did a good job.”

Talented field, Nationally Ranked Teams Headline Ballin' on the Red Invitational

Starting tonight Loyola College Prep and Louisiana Youth Developmental will host the 1st Annual Ballin' on the Red tournament at LSU-Shreveport starting tonight at 6:30. Highlighting the field are two 2009 state champions in 3A Richwood-Monroe and 2A Riverside Academy of LaPlace,(all players on RA were apart of the Class C Championship team at Reserver Christian before the school closed) a state runner-up team in 4A Bossier, and semi-finalist Christian Life-Baton Rouge of 1A(3-time state champ from 2006-08). Rounding out the field includes Shreveport teams Loyola of 3A and Airline of 5A along with 4A Vandebilt Catholic from Houma. Loyola College Prep and Louisiana Youth Developmental have put together a great field loaded with talent.
"I wanted to bring team to shreveport and also the local coaches wanted to play other teams." tournament director Mike Theus said. "Should be some great opening round games(tonight). Bossier vs Richwood, CLA vs Airline and Riverside vs Vandy will all be great games."
Great games is an understatement by Theus, who runs the Louisiana Select Nike Travel Team as well. With Christian Life you get three division 1 signees in top 120 player Langston Galloway(St. Joseph's), Patrick Robinson(Northwestern State) and Kaleb Knight(Grambling State). This is just the kids that are already signed. CLA has a potential to have four more kids sign late with two possibly going Division 1. Riverside will be led highly touted sophomore Ricardo Gathers and seniors Cedric Jenkins(pictured right after winning 2008 State Title), Ed Gallina and Kyle McClue, and no this isn't all RA has, they have a load of sophomores to go with Gathers who will or could sign division 1. These ae just two teams filled with talented players from that Bayou State.
Although the casual fan would think Theus could be overstating that comment, he isn't. Richwood returns nearly every player from their 3A State title team. Leading the way for the Rams are 6'7" LaDarrin Williams, LeDon Carter, Marceis Davis, D'Andre Martin. Bossier is another highly talented team led by junior Jalan West(pictured right) and sophomore Devonte Francis. Other players to watch are Airline's Josh Hagins in which rumors out of Shreveport are that he could be the best sophomore guard in the state in the 2012 class which is a loaded group of players.
This season's event starts tonight at 6:30 at LSU-Shreveport according to my schedule. Each team is guaranteed 3 games and the event will continue through Saturday and ends with the championship at 8:00 p.m. If you are at home or are in the area today through saturday make your way to LSU-S to see some of the state's top players. You will NOT be disappointed.

Bossier- Devonta Francis 5'9" Soph. Guard

Mean Green Wins Double Overtime Thriller Over UTA 101-99Box Score
The former Christian Life star and current North Texas star Josh White scored 35 and seemed to be back to 100% after playing all of last season with a nagging wrist injury. While at Christian Life, White played for current Baton Rouge C.C. coach Todd Foster and led the Crusaders to Back-To-Back state titles.
ARLINGTON, Texas - It took two overtimes but North Texas finally ended the hex of UT Arlington. In dramatic fashion Josh White poured in a career-high 35 points and North Texas (2-0) knocked off UTA (1-1) 101-99 in double overtime from Texas Hall. The win by North Texas ended a five-game winning streak for UTA over the Mean Green.
"A lot of guys really stepped up for us on the defensive end on the floor for us when we needed it down the stretch," said coach Johnny Jones. "We are lucky to have No. 10 (White) on our side and he made so many great plays for us tonight. People were able to see the type of player that he is, and we are fortunate that he is back at 100 percent and he is just a warrior."
White led the way for North Texas as the game featured 19 lead changes. With North Texas leading 101-99 with 3.5 second left, UTA had one final chance to tie the game, but Brandon Long's jumper rattled out. The game went to overtime after a furious rally by North Texas in regulation.
Trailing 76-69 with 4:57 left, North Texas went on a 10-1 run over the next two minutes to take a 79-77 lead with 2:13 left in the game. The Mavericks retook the lead at 80-79 with 1:38 on a Marquez Haynes layup. White responded with a basket and North Texas went back up 81-80 with a minute left. The two teams traded free throws and UTA had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation but Haynes missed a jumper at the buzzer.
In the first overtime the two teams traded free throws and buckets. With less than a minute left in the first overtime, North Texas had a 94-93 lead with 28 seconds left after two free throws by White. Long had another chance to win the game for UTA at the free throw line with 3.3 seconds left, but made just one out of two and the game went to a double overtime where the Mean Green were able to outlast the Mavs.
True freshman Jacob Holman had a big night with 14 points and George Odufuwa recorded a double-double with 18-points and 11 rebounds. North Texas made 57 trips to the free throw line, which is the second most in school history.
North Texas is back in action on Saturday afternoon as they face Oklahoma State in Stillwater at 12:30 p.m

Armelin leads Sulphur past Carencro
Sulphur's Chip Armelin(below)
By Rodrick AndersonSouthwest Daily News
Sulphur, La. -
The Senior duo of Chip Armelin and Donovan Williams led the Sulphur Tors to a 66-42 win over Carencro in their season opener on Tuesday at home.
Armelin led all scorers with 29 points, while Williams controlled the lane on both sides of the ball with a double-double. Williams finished with 13 points, 11 rebounds and six blocked shots.
“They had a lot of opportunities,” Sulphur head coach Clint LeBato said. “That is their role.
“Chip is going to be our scorer and Donovan is going to be our inside guy.”
The Bears tried to key on Armelin most of the game but he ended up going 15-of-18 from the free throw line. Sulphur shot 81 percent as a team from the free throw line.
LeBato was pleased the Tors’ performance in their season opener but Sulphur did struggle some with turnovers. After just two in the first quarter, Sulphur finished with over 15.
“We were a little rusty on the offensive end but overall we played hard,” LeBato said. “We had way too many unforced turnovers tonight.”
