Jackson's Six 3's lead Rosepine(late friday)

By Josh Troy

Beauregard Daily News
DeRidder, La. -

ROSEPINE—Julius Jackson’s six 3-pointers and 35 points helped propel the Rosepine Eagles (1-1) basketball team to a runaway victory against the Merryville Panthers (1-1) in the Rosepine Tournament Thursday night. Rosepine won 83-40.

“We really didn’t come out with that much intensity tonight (Thursday),” Eagles head coach Danny Fletcher said, adding he did not know why since Rosepine hosted the tournament.

Rosepine and Merryville faced one another Tuesday.

Although it was not indicated by the score, Panthers head coach Rory Hollier was pleased with the improvements made by Merryville.

“We made improvements from Tuesday night,” Hollier said. “We probably had less turnovers tonight (Thursday).”

Hollier said the Panthers also performed better on the boards and learned who to go with the ball.
He added the next step is to execute.

Rosepine took a 30-5 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back.

The Eagles scored the first 18 points of the game unanswered.

Jackson scored 13 of the first 15 points for Rosepine.

That was when he converted three of his 3-pointers and he also had a steal and fast break for a 2-pointer.

“I thought we had a pretty good touch on the ball,” Fletcher said.

However, Fletcher said the Eagles did not play well with the press. He noted Rosepine missed too many free throws.

“It’s hard to play the same team back-to-back,” Fletcher said.

Merryville came alive in the fourth quarter.

Each team scored 15 points during the final quarter, but the Eagles had put the game away much earlier.

John Hobbs scored nine fourth quarter points for the Panthers. That included a 3-pointer.

“Overall, I was pleased with our progress,” Hollier said.

Hollier said he expects the first two weeks of the Panthers season to be tough, but already Merryville’s conditioning has improved.

“I can see a light at the end of the tunnel,” Hollier said. “It’s a long way to get there.”

For the Eagles, Jackson scored 35 points, Richard Palmer scored 16 points, Ethan Calcote scored 10 points, Shane Longoria scored seven points, Jason Allerdyce scored eight points, Breland Parrott scored two points and Tyler Thompson scored three points.

For the Panthers, Hobbs scored 15 points and four assists, Garrett Knowlton scored one point and collected six rebounds, Eric Palmer scored six points and had three assists, Greg Sweet scored five points, Corey Cantrell scored five points, Jaylen Bradshaw scored six points and Garrett Riggs scored two points and had three blocks. Merryville is back in action at 5:30 p.m. tonight against Pitkin in the Rosepine Tournament and Rosepine is back in action at 5:30 p.m. Saturday against DeRidder in the Rosepine Tournament.

Minden High Wins at Lakeview Tourney

Minden's A'Torri "AJ" Shine
SIBLEY — Minden High took home a win in Thursday’s action at the Don Stahl Memorial Tournament at Lakeside.

Minden 58, Lakeview 56

The Crimson Tide led for most of the game, before Lakeview rallied to make it close it the fourth quarter.

The Tide had a four-point lead late, but Lakeview hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to one with eight seconds left.

After the inbounds play, Minden’s Jay Beavers was fouled, and made one of two free throws to move the lead to 58-56. Lakeview tried a desperation shot as the buzzer sounded, but missed.

“I thought we played extremely well for three quarters,” Minden head coach Alan Shaw said. “We executed our offense, and were patient looking for the shots we wanted. But for some reason, in the fourth quarter we just went completely brain dead. We decided to shoot quick and started taking some three-pointers that we didn’t need to take with a seven or eight-point lead. And because of our inefficiency on offense, we allowed Lakeview to get back in the game.”

With the game slipping away towards the end, the Tide used their defense to turn the momentum back around.

“What saved us was our defense,” Shaw said. “Late in the game, when we had to have some stops, we went to a zone. That stopped their penetration and caused some turnovers. Then we had some kids make some big free throws down the stretch to seal the game for us.”

A.J. Shine led Minden with 21 points and Jay Beavers dropped in 13. T.J. Stanley added 11.

“I was proud of our guys for sticking in there at the end and not folding,” Shaw said. “We went out there and made the plays we needed to get the win.”

The Tide will play Haughton in the semi-finals Saturday at 12 p.m.

East Ascension powers past Warriors in season opener(Late from last Monday)

East Ascension’s Bobby Madere converts a lay up in
transition over Christopher Bailey to open the 2nd half
of the Spartans’ 66-43 season opening victory Monday

By Peter Silas Pasqua

East Ascension limited St. Michael to just six points in the third quarter to blow open an 11-point halftime lead on way to a 66-43 season opening victory Monday night at EAHS’ gym. The Spartans’ reserves continued the onslaught taking their biggest, 29 points, with 1:50 left to play.

“I thought they had a decent start to the second half and then we caught our second wind and played real well,” East Ascension head coach Kenny Almond said. “We got to work on holding the ball when they were doubling and got through without getting anybody hurt so it was a good game.

“We played a good system. They are a little young and have to come around but we are going to play a lot quicker athletes than they have down the road.”

Sulphur Tors’ experience, good rebounding lead to win

Sulphur's Donovan Williams led the Tor's
with 12 points and 6 rebounds Friday night

By Mickel Ponthieux

Southwest Daily News
Lake Charles, La. -
The Sulphur Tors never panicked in a close 62-57 win over Iowa in the Tors' last game of the LaGrange tournament.

"It's the experience to handle the situation," Sulphur head coach Clint LeBato said on the Tors' composure. "Our guys came through big time."

Sulphur went into the half tied with the Yellow Jackets at 34-34 and Iowa was able to get a one-point edge after the third quarter to take a 46-45 lead.

The Tors never gave up and battled with the Yellow Jackets in the fourth quarter. Chip Armelin put Sulphur up by one with three and a half minutes remaining. Then a minute later, the Tors broke away with a 6-0 run to take a 61-54 lead with 1:26 remaining.

Battle of Nationally Ranked Teams Highlight Ballin' on the Red Day 2!!

Riverside Academy Coach Timmy Byrd will lead his team tonight
against Christian Life in the Semi-Finals at the Ballin' on the Red
Pictured Below vs. Christian Life last season on opening night.

Well last night was a night of easy victories for Bossier, Christian Life and Riverside, but now is when the action heats up. Bossier easily dominated 3A Richwood who were without 12 players due to football including one of their top players Marceis Davis. The only score I received last night was Bossier over Richwood 82-54. Jalan West led Bossier with 20 and LaDon Carter had 23 for Richwood. The next two games finished late so there were no reports from the host last night, hopefully we will receive that today for tomorrow.

Now, on with the matchups for today, Richwood will play Loyola at 5:00.(who recieved a bye but since guaranteed 3 games they will play Richwood in a game just make sure everybody gets 3 games).  Game 2 is Vandebilt Catholic vs Airline at 6:30 for the second of the consolation games. The nightcap features Christian Life, ranked 77th nationally vs. Riverside who is ranked 96 in the first semi-final contest. The two nationally ranked teams has a lot of bragging rights on the table. Last season Christian Life swept all 3 games against Timmy Byrd's squad when they were at Reserve and the year before that they beat the same team to end the season. CLA has won 4 straight against this group and look to make it 5. The biggest key to this matchup will be coaching. Todd Foster left CLA for a head coaching spot at Baton Rouge C.C. and was replaced by former Plainview head coach Carlo Maggio. On paper, CLA and Riverside are equal in the talent department but the matchup will be the coaches. Timmy Byrd has won a ton of state titles in his years coaching and this season could be no different. Not only has he won, he knows how to win and can coach in close games. Will this be a classic battle where coaching decided the game or will the stars Langston Galloway, McCall Tomeny and Patrick Robinson lead CLA to victory over Ricardo Gathers, Cedric Jenkins and Kyle McClue of Riverside? We will see tonight, it should be classic. Gametime for this match up is 8:00 at LSU-S.

The final game tonight will be Bossier vs. Loyola in the second semi-final. Bossier is coming off a huge win over defending 3A state champ Richwood. Jalan West had a team high 20 points and Jordan James also contributed 11 points and tons of assist including a few alley-oop passes late in the game. Another player to watch will be the inside presence of Darmaneiya Francis of Bossier who I have been told added a lot of muscle since last year. Freshman Zack Bramburg will look to lead Loyola to an upset win.

Sulphur, La. -

Head Basketball Coach Clint LeBato and Coach Charles “Skip” Carlin visited the Sulphur Rotary Club on Wednesday to talk about the team, the new season, and the Sulphur Golden Tor Tournament, which is from December 28 to 30. He told the group that there are three things that make his program successful: a great community, coaching and facilities, and the players themselves. He said that he does have a tough schedule and a lot of young players but if everything comes together, he looks for great things to happen.
