The 25th annual Livingston Parish Boys and Girls Basketball Tournament gets underway at Maurepas on Tuesday, with five-time champions Walker girls and Springfield boys coming in as top seeds.
The LadyCats, under third-year head coach John McMillan won the tournament two years ago, but had to settle for the runnerup spot last year, as Denham Springs took the title with a 46-38 win.
The Lady Jackets are seeded second this year, followed by Albany, Doyle, Springfield, Holden, Live Oak, French Settlement and Maurepas.
Springfield's boys were also parish tournament runners-up a year ago, losing to Albany 63-40.
The Hornets, who had some huge losses to graduation last year, are seeded fifth this year.
Live Oak was voted the second seed, followed by Denham Springs, Walker, Albany, Maurepas, French Settlement, Holden and Doyle.
Springfield head coach Mark Erdey is the only coach to have coached in the first one and is tied with former DSHS head coach Paul Smith for the most parish titles with five.
"It's a big deal for us," said Erdey of the parish tourney. "It's one of our goals every year to win the tournament. It's tough though, because we're a little behind because of football every year.
"But it's the most prestigious tournament on our schedule," said Erdey.
Earning a first-round bye as a No. 1 seed, Springfield will take on the Holden-Doyle winner on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
"I know we have good enough players where we could win the parish tournament, but I don't know if we'll be ready in time," said Erdey, who just got the bulk of his players back after a two-week run in the football playoffs. "I know we're doing everything we can to get ready."
Along with Holden and Doyle battling at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, the other first-round boys game on Tuesday will pit Walker and Albany at 8:30.
First-round boys games on Wednesday will have No. 3 seed DSHS taking on Maurepas at 5:30, while No. 2 Live Oak and FSHS tangle at 8:30.
While the LadyCats will wait until 7 p.m. on Thursday to take to the court against the FSHS-Maurepas winner, No. 2 DSHS will play Live Oak at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, preceded by two other girls first-round game, Doyle and Springfield at 5:30 and FSHS and Maurepas at 2:30.
Wednesday's first-round girls games will have No. 3 Albany taking on No. 6 Holden at 7.
DSHS has won the most girls titles with seven, while current head coach Shelly LaPrarie has the most wins with four, followed by three former coaches, JoAnn Smith of Albany, Lisa Brewer of Walker and Jennifer Goodwin of Doyle, all with three each.
Both the Walker and Albany girls programs have five parish titles.
The Lady Jackets, however, have won four of the last five girls championships.
While LaPrarie and McMillan are the only two active girls coaches with parish titles, six current boys coaches all have titles, Evan Balfanz of Maurepas, Kenny Gautreau of French Settlement, Wynn Wingate of DSHS, Anthony Schiro of Walker, Erdey of Springfield and last year's winner, Daniel Kennedy of Albany.
Schiro has the distinction of winning the parish tournament as both a player at Walker (1995) and has a coach at Albany (2005).
All four semifinal games are set for Friday, while a full day of action is set for Saturday, beginning with consolation games leading up to the two championship games at 7 p.m. (girls) and 8:30 (boys).

Glen Oaks' Erron Chesterfield, Brian Williams get love from ESPNU
Courtesy Reggie Rankin of ESPNU
• Power forward Erron Chesterfield (Baton Rouge, La./ Glen Oaks) is raw, but very long and athletic. He blocks shots and scores by running the floor or on put backs. Chesterfield is built like Chicago Bulls forward and former LSU star forward Tyrus Thomas and has tremendous upside
• Oklahoma State signee SF Brian Williams (Baton Rouge, La./ Glen Oaks) was also very impressive at times with his excellent middle game and athletic scoring moves in the lane. Williams also hit the boards on both ends and competed the entire time he was on the floor.

FRIDAY'S RECAP
Just in case you're keeping score at home (like I am), the Houston vs Dallas battle is all tied up at 2-2 while the Houston vs Louisiana is also knotted at 1-1. That means, bragging rights will be at stake Saturday when all the teams resume action. Some of the high / low notes from Friday included...

- Junior pg Anthony Collins (12p/ 11a) proved to be press-proof while dismantling Dallas Kimball w/ a double-double.

RECAP: THANKSGIVING JAMBOREE
By: Jim Hicks (RCS Sports)
The Thanksgiving Jamboree concluded yesterday with a pair of very exciting finishes. Director Rick Nelson is commended for having a super crew of support staffers, and the hospitality room was filled with aromas of superb dishes. Most importantly, he orgazined a swell lineup of elite high school teams which completed a holiday weekend of hoops. The Dallas vs Houston series resulted in a 5-5 tie after two days of action.
Bellaire used a second half surge to erase a 14pt deficit, and proceeded to knock off Duncanville (42-39) in the finale. Junior guard Sheldon McClellan (8pts) sank a set of free throws with :07 remaining to seal the win. The projected fireworks show between the state's top two big men never materialized into much more than a spark. Perry Jones was held without a field goal in the fourth quarter and totaled 9pts while Tobi Oyedeji (who isn't really expected to do much offensively) had 8pts but hauled in several key rebounds.
Dallas Kimball nearly embarrassed themselves twice in the same game against Port Arthur Memorial. Despite leading by double digits in the third period, a pair of Kimball players were removed from the bench after "getting into it" with each other. Additionally, the Dallas Independent School District athletic director (who happens to be the father of Kimball's coach) was seated within 12 feet of the distraction. Afterwards, Port Arthur Memorial erased the lead and took the lead down the stretch. Trailing 62-61 with the clock dwindling below 10 seconds, Kimball's David Kates dribbled just outside the left three point line. And in one motion he tossed a no look - over the shoulder bullet to Keith Hargest all alone underneath the basket for the game winning layup as time expired.
Exposure is pricelss! Thanks to all the of media personnel who were in attendance evaluating the participating teams / players including Reggie Rankin (ESPN), Ron Briscoe (Nike Basketball), Eric Bossi (PrepStars / EBossHoops/ Scout.com), Blue Zertuche (Texas Hoops), Sam Lowe (Texas Hoops), Max Ivany (TexasBasketball Inc), and Larry Shepherd (The Basketball Connection).

Hammond Area Report: STA holds off Ponchy; Tors rally
By Mike Kiral
Ponchatoula head coach Dustin Easley wanted to play more up-tempo against St. Thomas Aquinas in the Tres Bridges Classic at Albany Saturday evening.
Instead, the game turned into another defensive struggle for the Green Wave with the Falcons holding on for a 51-46 victory.
Ponchatoula rallied from a 10-point fourth quarter deficit and had a chance to tie it at 48 but LaDonovan Grannison and Javeon Walker missed on shots in the final 15 seconds left. Zay Jackson then put the game with a breakaway dunk with 1.4 seconds remaining.
Earlier in the tournament, Hammond used a 24-4 second-half run to rally past Springfield, 75-67.
BOYS GAMES
St. Thomas 51, Ponchatoula 46
St. Thomas took a 46-36 lead on two Blake Duncan free throws with 3:05 left in the game. John Brown started the Ponchatoula comeback with a layup. After two Cole Plummer free throws, Grannison buried a 3-pointer from the left wing to make it 48-46 with 18.7 seconds left.
Walker then got a steal and found Grannison inside. Walker grabbed Grannison’s miss but his follow went off the rim. Jackson got the ball on the break and was intentionally fouled while going in for the dunk, adding the free throw to seal the win.
Walker’s jumper with four seconds left gave the Green Wave a 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Walker then opened the second period with a 3 from the left wing. But Stephen Wronkoski answered with seven straight free throws to regain the lead for St. Thomas. After Johnathon Lyons scored off a pass from Walker to tie it at 17 with 44 seconds left in the half, Brandon Robertson found DJ Cannon inside to give the Falcons a 19-17 halftime lead.
Ponchatoula tied the game at 21 with two free throws by Brown with 6:13 left in the third. But Wronkoski followed with a put back and a 3 to make it 26-21. Another 3 by Cannon gave the Falcons a 10-point lead before D.J. Mobley hit a short jumper to make it 34-26 going into the final quarter.
Cannon’s 3 from the left wing to start the fourth gave St. Thomas its biggest lead at 37-26. Brown scored off a pass from Danny Dunn to get the deficit down to 41-36 before Wronkoski hit a jumper to make it 44-36 with 3:29 left.
Wronkoski finished with a game-high 19 points. Jackson added 16 points for the Falcons.
Brown had 14 points and Walker 13 for Ponchatoula.
Hammond 75, Springfield 67

The Tors opened the fourth quarter with eight unanswered points, pulling to within 56-53 on a pass from Terrence Bridges to Mikel Henry. Hammond stretched the lead to 69-62 on two free throws by Douglas. Cody Scott knocked down a 3 for Springfield to make it a four-point game. But Bridges converted a three-point play off a pass from Henry to push the lead back to 72-65 with 1:15 remaining.
“We really picked up the pressure in the second half and made their guards work real hard and forced a lot of turnovers,” Hammond head coach Brent Grigas said.
Henry led all scorers with 24 points. Douglas tossed in 20 and Bridges 13.
Scott had 21 points for Springfield. Henderson added 14 points.
Springfield led 17-8 following a layup by Tony Patrick with 2:30 left in the first quarter. Hammond pulled to within 19-15 on a layup by Ricky Burris at the end of the quarter, then tied it on one by Douglas early in the second period.

Lake Charles Area Report: Sulphur Tors go 1-1 at SportsMed Shootout in Alabama
By Staff reports
Southwest Daily News
Huntsville, Al. -
The Sulphur Tor basketball team held its own against some of the top teams in the state of Alabama at the SportsMed Shootout in Huntsville, Alabama over the weekend.
The Tors won their opening round game on Thursday before falling 49-44 to Alabama Class 5A No. 3 Lee High School in the second round on Friday.
It was the first loss of the season for the Tors who are now 5-1.
"We definitely played well," Sulphur head coach Clint LeBato said. "Our guys had to step it up and they played well.
"It was good for us."
Lee High features one of the top college prospects in the nation in senior guard/forward Josh Langford (6'6"). Langford had originally committed to Louisville but he changed his mind and is now getting interest from the likes of Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Marquette and UNLV.
Sulphur was able to hold Langford to just 12 points in the game and held a 44-40 lead with about a minute and a half remaining.
But Lee HS took advantage of some late turnovers by the Tors and closed out the game with a 9-0 run to knock Sulphur out of the tournament.
"We didn't do a good job of finishing the game," LeBato said. "They (Lee HS) are good and have a good player that everyone in the country wants.
"We were in the hole and finally opened it up but they got a couple of easy points off our turnovers to take the lead."
Suiting up just eight players, the Tors opened the tournament on Thursday with a 49-45 over Hillcrest win for their fifth consecutive win.
The Tors jumped out to a 8-2 lead but struggled during the second quarter and found themselves trailing by seven late in the third quarter but were able to turn it around in the fourth quarter for the win.
Senior guard Chip Armelin led the Tors with 20 points and Aaron Cupit added 16. Donovan Williams added nine points and Tanner Kuykendall had a team-high nine rebounds.
The Tors will not get much of a break, as they will be headed to Lafayette on Tuesday to play former district rival St. Thomas More in the Cajun Dome on the campus of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette at 7 p.m.
After Tuesday's game, Sulphur will have a week off to practice before returning home on December 8th for a game against DeRidder.

Anderson's clutch 3 helps Bastrop sink Dollarway(AR)
Donald Washington (20) and Arthur Moses (34) of Bastrop
battle for a rebound during the Rams’ season-opening 52-34
win over Ouachita Christian. Washington scored 10 points
in Bastrop’s 47-45 road victory Dollarway on Tuesday night
By Staff reportsBastrop Daily Enterprise
PINE BLUFF, Ark. -
During Bastrop’s recently completed football season, Adrian Witherspoon was one of quarterback Darren Anderson’s favorite receivers. Playing in their first basketball game of the season, the two hooked up again. This time it was Witherspoon passing to Anderson with dramatic results.
Anderson nailed a 3-pointer as the final horn sounded as Bastrop upset Dollarway 47-45 Tuesday night.
Bastrop, which trailed nearly the entire contest, missed potential game-tying shots on its previous two possessions.
Following the Cardinals’ third consecutive turnover, the Rams advanced the ball to midcourt and called timeout with 9.9 seconds remaining.
“Playing on the road, I told our guys during the timeout, ‘We’re fixing to try to win it,’” Bastrop coach David Patrick said.
Taking a pass from Witherspoon, Anderson buried the game-winning shot from the right corner.
Bastrop (2-0) trailed by nine points early in the fourth quarter, before battling its way back into the game.
Draining three early 3-pointers, the Cardinals (0-1) streak to an early 9-0 lead and were up 24-19 at halftime.
Anderson, who scored seven points in the final period, and Donald Washington led the Rams’ balanced attack with 10 apiece. For the Cardinals, Tevin Tyson flipped in 17 points, including four 3-pointers. Jamarcus Davis added 12 points on three trifectas, all in the second half.
Dollarway shot 17-of-31 (55 percent) from the floor, but had 25 turnovers.
“That’s our bread and butter, the 2-2-1,” Patrick said. “We try to keep everything in front of us, and I was pleased with the way we did that, especially being on the road.”
Crossing the state line once again on Tuesday, Bastrop will play Hot Springs in the El Dorado Tournament. Starting times are 4 p.m. for the girls and 5:15 for the boys.
