Trevon Lewis scored 22 points to lead Ellender to a 57-43 victory against Hahnville in the Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Classic.

Joe Wheaton and Kardero Dixon each scored 10 to add to the Patriots' offense. Dylan Parfait contributed six points in a crucial stretch.

"We are an experienced team, and I challenged our team to respond like they were capable of doing," said Ellender Coach Scott Gauthreaux.

Parfait keyed a rally late in the third quarter for the Patriots (6-1) by scoring on two 3-pointers. A layup with 30 seconds left gave Ellender its first lead of the game, 35-34. The run sparked a 22-2 burst that continued late into the contest.

Hahnville (4-1) took control early in the game by shooting 50 percent from the field and outrebounding Ellender 13-10. The Patriots found it difficult to manufacture any type of offensive threat. Twice in the first half, they went four minutes in between baskets. In the first quarter alone, they made just 28 percent of their shots.

Jauries Thomas led the Tigers with 20, and Warren Lebeauf added 12.

St. Amant's Gold Dome Classic Reports Part 3: East Ascension rallies past Hammond

By Peter Silas Pasqua

Weekly Citizen

ST. AMANT - East Ascension erased a 12-point third quarter deficit with a furious 12-0 run in the final frame to rally by Hammond 61-54 in the final game of the opening round of the Ralph Sellers Gold Dome Classic Wednesday night.

Donald LeBlanc nailed four straight free throws to kick start the rally that was capped by Tyler Wright’s visit to the charity stripe which put East Ascension ahead 49-45.

“It wasn’t anything mind boggling. More than anything else, it was a change in our attitude toward the game,” East Ascension head coach Kenny Almond said. “A lot of credit goes to Willie Williams. He brought some toughness and I think we fed off that. They ran us out of our offense but when we got some steals, we played well. It was the mindset more than anything else. We just told them to start playing tough.”

East Ascension beat Hammond at the buzzer 61-58 in last year’s semifinals of the tournament to cap a 20-point comeback.

“We were concerned,” Almond said. “Seeing that all five of those guys were back, I really thought it was going to be a tough night and it was. We were lucky in a lot of ways but we woke up and hopefully it sets the tone for the rest of the season.”

Keith Fleming led all scorers with 20 points for East Ascension (5-2), while LeBlanc added 15, Curtis Watts provided 11 and Wright had eight.

Mike Henry paced the Tornadoes (3-1) with 17 points, while Kylan Douglas added 15 and Mark Bridgewater had 10.

“When you go one for 20 from three you are not going to win very many games,” Hammond head coach Brent Grigas said. “We have never shot it that bad and we don’t plan on shooting it that bad again. Coach Almond is a great coach and they really picked up the pressure and forced our guards into some turnovers in the second half that normally doesn’t happen. We started reaching and a couple of kids fouled out which hurt us.”

Douglas’ putback gave Hammond a 38-26 lead in the third quarter. Henry’s dish to Douglas off a steal kept the deficit at 12 going into the final frame after LeBlanc drove lane.

LeBlanc fed Fleming off a steal to open the fourth quarter before Fleming returned the favor. LeBlanc’s dish to Fleming inside in transition knotted it up 45-45 with 4:24 left to play after Fleming’s putback. Fleming’s turnaround jumper off Watts’ inbounds pass put the Spartans ahead for good.

“(LeBlanc) is a ninth grader playing at a high level,” Almond said. “He has to understand he is playing varsity basketball. He is going to learn from his mistakes. We are expecting a lot of things out of him and he still surprises us with some of the great things he does but the more he does it, the more we expect it out of him.”

Wright and Fleming’s inside buckets sandwiched Gary Johnson’s before Watts and LeBlanc’s free throws down the stretch sealed the win.

Terrence Bridges’ putback gave Hammond a 4-0 lead to open the contest before DeAndre Smith’s put the Spartans on the board. Henry sandwiched a baseline drive and lay up off a steal around LeBlanc’s lane drive to make it 8-4.

LeBlanc’s spin in the lane put East Ascension ahead after Smith’s 3-pointer near the top of the key. Bridgewater’s free throws put Hammond back ahead after his layup off a steal and Watts’ putback. Fleming’s inside bucket and one off an inbounds pass knotted it up 14-14 going into the second quarter.

Henry’s 3-pointer from the right corner opened the frame before Watts’ 19 footer in the left corner. Watts’ baseline jumper put East Ascension ahead 20-17 before Henry’s floater across the lane and drive in transition gave the Tornadoes the lead. Bridgewater and Henry’s lay ups off steals pushed the lead to 32-22 before Smith’s 19-footer from the right corner cut it to eight at halftime.

St. Amant's Gold Dome Classic Reports Part 2: Woodlawn pushes past Griffins in overtime

opening round victory at the Gold Dome Classic

ST. AMANT - Woodlawn’s Eric Vidrine nailed a 3-pointer from the left wing in overtime and the Panthers connected on six of eight free throws down the stretch to turn back Dutchtown 61-57 in the opening game of the first round of the Ralph Sellers Gold Dome Classic Wednesday evening.

Woodlawn led by as many as 15 points in the third quarter before the Griffins’ Terrance Cushenberry made the second of two free throws with 25.1 seconds remaining to send it into overtime knotted up 50-50.

“The kids showed a lot of resilience fighting back through the deficit but obviously it wasn’t enough,” Dutchtown head coach Patrick Hill said. “They posed a lot of matchups with their kids. We are not very tall and don’t jump very high. They got a lot of buckets on us just by missing shots and going back to get it.

“A couple of guys shoot the ball well but we have to get some scoring from somebody else on the court. I still consider that one of our weaknesses. We don’t shoot the ball that well.”

Woodlawn defeated Dutchtown 53-48 a week earlier in the Grady Hornsby Classic. The Panthers advanced to face Airline Thursday, while the Griffins fell into the loser’s bracket against Hammond Friday night.

The Griffins (2-3) were led by Cushenberry with 21 points. Scott Burgess added 18, while Jordon Biagas had 10.

Craig McFerrin led Woodlawn (5-2) with 31 points. Tim Crockett added 11 and Braylon Larzare provided nine.

“I thought we played about 28 minutes of really good basketball and in the last four minutes we checked out,” Woodlawn head coach Elmo Fernandez said. “They hit shots to get them back in the game and we knew they could do that. We turned the ball over at key moments. We have to go inside to our big people. That is our bread and butter. That is how we are going to win or lose games.”

McFerrin’s inside bucket put the Panthers ahead 31-16 in the third quarter before Cushenberry connected on three straight 3-pointers to cut it to nine which was the deficit heading into the final frame.

Cushenberry’s free throws to open the fourth quarter made it o 37-30 before Crockett and Biagas traded drives.

Burgess’s pull up jumper cut it to 42-39 with 3:30 left to play after Dorian Harleaux and Donovan McCall’s consecutive baseline jumpers. Jon Alexander and McFerrin’s drives sandwiched Biagas’ reverse before Burgess fed a driving McCall.

McCall’s dish to Cushenberry off a steal preceded McFerrin’s dunk in transition and Biagas’ baseline jumper before Cushenberry knotted it up.

Larzare fed McFerrin inside to open the extra frame before Harleaux’s tip and Vidrine’s 3-pointer. After Burgess’ free throws, Vidrine nailed four free throws before Cushenberry pulled up for a 3-pointer near the top of the key in the waning moments.

Cushenberry's drive across the lane opened the contest before Biagas’ jumper near the free throw line gave the Griffins their final lead 4-2. Woodlawn went ahead on Larzare’s inside bucket before McFerrin spun inside. Burgess nailed a 3-pointer near the top of the key to cut it to 12-10 at the buzzer after Larzare’s baseline jumper.

Larzare’s putback opened the second quarter before Burgess drove lane. McFerrin’s spin inside preceded Burgess’ putback before Cushenberry pulled up near the free throw line but Woodlawn closed out the half on a 7-0 run capped by McFerrin’s spin inside just before the buzzer after Larzare’s putback and Crockett’s dish to McFerrin in transition and one.

St. Amant's Gold Dome Classic Reports Part 1: Donaldsonville pulls away from St. Amant

By Peter Silas Pasqua

Weekly Citizen

ST. AMANT - Donaldsonville used a 6-0 run to open the third quarter and never looked back on way to a 60-42 victory over host St. Amant in the third game of the opening round of the Ralph Sellers Gold Dome Classic Wednesday night.

St. Amant led throughout the first quarter before Devon Breaux’s dish to Darvelle Allen in transition put the Tigers ahead for good 24-23 in the second frame.

“I thought that was the best game we played all year from start to finish and it started at practice,” St. Amant head coach Gary Duhe said. “We let it get away from us during a three minute stretch in the third quarter. They got a little separation and we had trouble closing the gap. When they increased the lead, they could dictate and wait till they got the chance to penetrate. They did a good job of that and we turned it over a couple of times which didn’t help us.”

Donaldsonville advanced to the face Ponchatoula Thursday and St. Amant fell into the loser’s bracket against Lutcher.

“We are getting better and better and we just have to keep it going,” Duhe said. “It is a marathon and not a sprint. We just have to keep playing.”

Steve Fulkerson led the Gators (0-6) with 14 points, while Justin Manton and Marlon Bourgeois each had 10.

Kelvon Davis paced Donaldsonville (4-2) with 15 points, while Aikee Turner provided 14 and Jarrett Cole added 10.

“We knew they had size and it was going to be a factor but I wasn’t worried about that too much,” Donaldsonville head coach Greg Hill said. “We had to put pressure on them and make them play the whole court instead of just half court. I knew if we would have stayed around in the half court game, we might of had some problems. We just do what we know how to do.”

Bourgeois’ drive off the opening tip opened the contest before his pass out to Manton for a 3-pointer on the left wing. Manton’s pass to Milek Beasley inside made it 7-3 before Davis’ penetrating dish to Lorenzo Collins.

Turner’s 3-pointer just before the buzzer cut it to 11-10 going into the second frame after Bourgeois’ putback.

Manton fed Fulkerson off the opening inbounds pass of the second quarter but Turner’s jumper and Cole’s putback put Donaldsonville ahead.

Fulkerson’s putback preceded Bourgeois’ dish to Manton inside and one giving the Gators an 18-14 lead. Davis’ dishes to Turner and Allen sandwiched Fulkerson’s pass to Jacky Joseph inside before Breaux’s baseline drive. Donaldsonville led 27-24 at halftime after Davis’ 3-pointer from the right corner off a steal.

Davis drive, lay up off a steal and dish to Turner opened the second half before Manton fed Fulkerson in transition. Bourgeois’ inside buckets sandwiched Collins’ putback before Turner’s reverse and Fulkerson’s drive. Collins’ putback and Cole’s lay up off a steal made it 43-32 going into the final frame.

Manton pulled up in the lane to open the fourth quarter but Cole’s baseline drive and putback pushed the lead to 13 before Beasley fed Bourgeois in transition.

Donaldsonville then used a 13-0 run to put the game away kick started by Breaux’s dish to Davis off a steal. Cortez Mitchell’s dish to Collins off a steal capped the run after Davis pulled up and Collins fed him off another steal.

Fulkerson’s baseline jumper and drive off a Hail Mary inbounds pass at the buzzer, both from Jacob Gauthier, reflected the final tally.

Player Feature: Louisiana D-1 Ambassador and Beau Chene High's Joseph Charles

Player Feature: 5'10 Guard Joseph Charles of Beau Chene High School

One of my top players from the summer with my Louisiana D-1 Ambassadors travel team, Joseph Charles of Beau Chene HS is averaging 21.2 ppg, 6 rpg, 5 apg and 4 steals early on in this 2009-10 high school season. Charles had an outstanding summer as he was named one of the top players from the Memphis River City Showdown Event and the Memphis Select Classic tournament as he led our team to a runner-up finish. In the two events Joe went head-to-head with some of the top players in the country. Some of the players include Joe Jackson, Chris Crawford and Tarik Black, all of who signed with Memphis. Mardracus Wade who signed with Arkansas. Casey Prather who signed with Florida, Austin Hollins who is headed to Minnesota, Will Triggs who is headed to Austin Peay and the list also includes a top 10 junior in the country in Adonis Thomas. Against this competition Joe averaged an outstanding 18.6 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 4.3 apg., 2.1 steals and an excellent stat of 1.2 turnovers while playing 28 min. a game out of 32.

A 5’10’’ point guard for the Louisiana D-1 Ambassadors, Charles can get it done in a variety of ways. Charles was most effective when driving to the basket, finishing with a lay-up, pull-up jumper, or a teardrop. Not limited to just driving and scoring, Charles also hit from outside and created opportunities for his teammates.-Clark Merriam ESPN's Memphis Roar.com

Joe is in his first season as senior at Beau Chene after transferring from Acadiana Prep in Opelousas. Previously Joe played and started at Carencro as a freshman and sophomore before heading to Prep. This is also Joe's first season playing since his sophomore season. While attending Acadiana Prep last year, Joe was involved in a terrible car wreck in October of 2008 in which he broke his neck, I believe his 6th vertebrae. After the wreck Joe spent 6 months in a Halo in which his neck was stabalized with a screws in his forehead and neck and made immovable. After having the Halo removed in March, Joe was back to playing in May as he joined Coach Max Ivany's Texas D1 Ambassadors squad in Alabama for the Crush Elite Main Event tournament sponsored by rivals.com. Joe helped lead the team to a tournament title along with current Memphis frosh DJ Stephens and BRCC freshman William Nelson. Also on the team that weekend were San Fransico signee Cody Doolin, Northern Colorado signee Paul Garnica(San Antonio's soon to be all time leading scorer), and Lamar signee Demetris "Cleveland" Smith. In what was Joe's first time playing in a game since the wreck he showed a lot of rust but you could obviously see the talent that he had as he made several great passes, played very good defense and finished well attacking the rim.

After the event Joe really caught my eye. For the entire summer we went to work really hard on his game in June, July and August.  Four days a week we were in the weight room at 6 a.m. and hitting the gym for two 2 hour sessions working on ball handling, shooting, quickness, fundamentals, conditioning and just learning how to play the game the right way, also spending late nights playing pick-up sometime until 2 in the A.M. After 4 weeks of working with me we were off to Memphis for the two tournaments up there. In the first event, Memphis Select Classic, Joe played great defense getting several steals and rebounds along with good offense. In the pool play games in which we won by an average of 34 ppg, Joe avg. onl 8 ppg appx. Once the bracket play got started and the stage got bigger, the better Joe played. In our first bracket game against Team Rameybasketball.com Joe finished with 28 points and six 3's as he willed us to the win over a team that featured 4 players 6'8" or better. As the bracket play continued, Joe continued his play at a high level as he finished the semi-final game with 18 and the finals with 23 and four 3's. It was definitely a feel good moment for me and Joe as well who came to me several times and said
"Coach, thanks for all your work you put in with us, I hate doing it, but it is obviously helping me for sure." Joe told me while sitting down at dinner one night.
I remember them words everyday. To think that this is a kid that just a few months ago was in a Halo and 8 months ago was in the bad car wreck. This kid has overcame so many obstacles and adversity that he deserves everything good that is coming his way.

In the past few months Joe has had to overcome a lot of personal problems outside of basketball. After dealing with these things and working hard in the classroom, Joe is on his way to getting what he wants, a Division 1 Scholarship to play basketball. Joe currently has close to a 3.0 GPA and is taking the ACT at the next testing date. While his team is only 3-4 at Beau Chene, those losses have come by an average of 4 points. On a team that didn't make the playoffs and won a handful of games last year, Joe has clearly made them a district contender this season. As the season continues, Joe will only get better and get more experience. As he does, watch out because he will be a player that will be a steal for any school that he signs with.

Salmen (3-3) closed the deficit to 12-8 on a basket by Khari Price with 6:17 left in the first half.

Minden High gets first round win in Homer Tournament

HOMER — After playing a series of tough, close games, the Minden Crimson Tide was able to get an easier win as they defeated the Springhill Lumberjacks, 75-56, Wednesday night in the first round of the Homer Tournament.

“It was good to have a game like this, where we could sit back and not have such a pressure packed game,” Minden head coach Alan Shaw said. “We were in control of the game from the start. We started off sloppy the first couple of minutes, but we pushed through it and never looked back.”

The Crimson Tide would lead 19-2 at the end of the first quarter, and Springhill never threatened the rest of the way.

“We were able to get the ball inside,” Shaw said. “And we really pushed the ball up and down the floor pretty well.

Defensively, we did a good job of limiting them to one shot, which gave us some fast-break opportunities, especially in the third quarter when we pushed the lead out big.”

Minden led by as much as 40 points in the third quarter, which allowed Shaw to clear his bench.

“Everybody contributed and everybody played well,” he said. “It was good to be able to rest our starters a little bit and cut down on their minutes and save their legs with a big week coming up. Plus, we got to look at some of the kids on the bench and they all played well. It gave us a little more confidence in our depth, so it was good to have this kind of win.”

A.J. Shine led Minden with 21 points and Jay Beavers scored 18. DeMondre’ Harvey scored nine, T.J. Stanley had eight and Dominique Emerson dropped in six. Simon Theus scored four points, Jamal Shine and D.J. Wallace each had three and Jarome Walton scored one.

The Crimson Tide will play next on Friday night at 6:15 p.m. against Madison.

“They are a very good team,” Shaw said. “They are 9-2 and they beat Athens last night. They are a very quick, very good team, and they get good play out of their guards. They will be the our toughest test so far this year.”
