Houma Area Report: Strong rebounding helps DeRidder edge Thibodaux
Staff Writer
Daily Comet
THIBODAUX — Not taking full advantage of their first chances at the basket, the DeRidder Dragons redeemed themselves on their second and third chances to beat Thibodaux at the Thibodaux High Thanksgiving Tournament on Tuesday night. DeRidder dominated the offensive boards en route to a 72-67 win that puts them in today's championship game against Christian Life, a 76-67 winnver over Helen Cox. Other than a 2-0 deficit, the Dragons never trailed in the tournament's semifinal game.
“They just played harder,” Thibodaux coach Tony Clark said. “A team that rebounds the ball like that, they deserved to win. (They got) second, third, fourth, and I think they even got five chances one time. We're going to get that corrected, because that was pretty sad.”
DeRidder coach Mike Greene said a couple things contributed to his team's dominance on the offensive boards. “We go five (players) in and five out,” Greene said. “We tend to kind of wear teams down a little bit. We did get a lot of second- and third-chance opportunities. Even though we're small, we're real quick off the floor.” For much of the first and second quarters, the Dragons (5-0 overall) held a comfortable lead, but late in the third quarter, Thibodaux rallied to cut the deficit to one point. Trailing 50-36 with 5:15 left in the third quarter, the Tigers (3-2) went on a 14-1 run to make it 51-50 at the end of the period.
Shavon Coleman (32 points) had six points during the run, and Trevor Duncan (14 points) added four. But DeRidder came out hot to start the fourth quarter, scoring 10 straight points to make it 61-50 with 5:35 left in the game. The Dragons got baskets on a pull-up jumper, a pair of put backs and a 3-pointer. Thibodaux tried to rally back, cutting it to 61-59 on a pair of Duncan free throws, but Coleman fouled out with 4:02 remaining, and the Tigers couldn't keep up. Clark said slowing down the offense helped Thibodaux get back into the game, but defensively, the Tigers struggled.
“We tried to slow it down and get the ball inside a little bit,” Clark said. “We did that, but still, we have to make stops. It ain't going to be the scoring — we've got to get stops, and we didn't do enough of that.”
Thibodaux's troubles started early. After taking a 2-0 lead, the Tigers gave up 10-unanswered points, falling behind 10-2. Thibodaux spent the rest of the first half trying to catch up, getting as close as three points and as far behind as 14. DeRidder led, 42-31, at halftime. Tre O'Bannon led the Dragons with 14 points, while Jodarius Jones had 13 and Kevin Gamble had 11.

DENHAM SPRINGS — It wasn’t a perfect effort by Denham Springs. But by claiming a 37-30 victory over Broadmoor in the final game of its own Grady Hornsby Classic, the Yellow Jackets did something it took the entire 2008-09 season to do.
“We didn’t shoot well, and there were some other things we didn’t do as well as I’d like,” Denham Springs coach Wynn Wingate said. “But I’ll go into Thanksgiving being thankful. We’ve got five wins and that’s what we had all last year.”
Randy Lathers scored a game-high 14 points and Brandon Watkins added 13 in DSHS’ win over the Bucs on Tuesday night at the Hornsby Gym. With the win, the Yellow Jackets (5-0) remain unbeaten.
Joshua Fealing finished with nine points for Broadmoor (1-4) in the game that closed the two-day tourney that consisted of a series of single games match-ing many of the area’s boys basketball teams.
“I thought Denham Springs played extremely hard the whole game and we didn’t,” Broadmoor coach Larry Grayson said. “We’re extremely young and I know that’s part of it. But Denham Springs out-muscled us and got the rebounds and loose balls. They made their breaks.”
The teams traded the lead three times in the first quarter. Broadmoor tied it at 8-8 with 30 seconds left on a rebound and layup by Reggie Williams.
Watkins, who scored nine first-half points, started to assert himself on the inside as the second quarter unfolded. He made three baskets in less than a minute and a half as the Yellow Jackets surged to a 16-12 lead.
Two free throws by Hunter Etheridge and a spin move in the lane by Jeremy Washington increased DSHS’ lead to 20-12 in the final minute. A layup by Broadmoor’s Cullen Barnes with two seconds left made it 20-14 at halftime.
Denham Springs scored the first five points of the second half and led by 11 at 25-14. Broadmoor outscored the Yellow Jackets 12-5 the rest of the way. A basket by Daricus Ventress got the Bucs within four, at 30-26, to end the third quarter.
DSHS missed the front end of two one-and-ones early in the fourth quarter, but Broadmoor never capitalized.
Two plays by Lathers — a jumper in the lane at the 3:24 mark and two free throws less than a minute later — gave Denham Springs the breathing room needed. Watkins closed the game with a layup with just more than a minute remaining.
WOODLAWN 53, DUTCHTOWN 48: Woodlawn (3-2) outscored the Griffins 27-11 in the second half to net the win. Braylon Lazare scored a game-high 23 points, including three of four free throws in the final 10 seconds. Jon Alexander put the Panthers ahead for good with a layup at the 1:05 mark. Craig McFerrin added 13 for the winners. Terrance Cushenberry (18) and Scott Burgress (15) powered Dutchtown (1-2).
Dutchtown led 37-26 at halftime. It took the Griffins more than four minutes to score in the third quarter and WHS closed the gap.
“We came out asleep against a very good team,” Woodlawn coach Elmo Fernandez said. “I thought they had us. Fortunately, we played better in the second half and made some free throws at the end.”
PLAQUEMINE 30, ST. MICHAEL 16:
Plaquemine (4-1) took a 20-8 halftime lead and never looked back. Jeffrey Ricard scored a game-high nine points for the Green Devils. William Arcement had five points to pace Michael (1-1).
CENTRAL 64, LUTCHER 46:
Brock Poydras scored a team-high 15 points to help Central take a victory over Lutcher in the first of four games. Dylan Anders (12) and LaQuin Turner (11) also led the Wildcats.

New Orleans Area Report: Jesuit upends West Jeff
By Peter Steinbauer

Jesuit held a four-point lead against West Jefferson at the start of the fourth quarter, but its top-two scorers were sitting on the bench. Late in the third, Colby Keiffer tweaked his ankle, and Brady Hadden(pictured right) picked up his fourth foul.
But the Blue Jays extended their lead to eight in the opening minutes of the fourth with baskets from Josh Dudley and Alec Melendreras. Jesuit went on to defeat the Bucs 56-48 for a semifinal win at the Stanley Ray Jesuit Invitational Tournament.
"I turned to Brady and said, 'how are we going to score,' " Jesuit Coach Chris Jennings said. "And then Josh got the lay up, so that was good, that was the turning point."
Hadden returned several minutes into the fourth, scoring eight points to help put away the game. He finished with 19 points. Keiffer paced Jesuit for much of the night, scoring 22 points. He was 3-of-6 from behind the 3-point line. The Blue Jays are trying to adjust without their top returning player, senior Dominick Scelfo, who will miss at least the next month after having surgery to repair a torn meniscus.
West Jefferson (1-1) Coach Rusty Jones said with only one returning starter, his team still is learning how to play the game. The Bucs trailed for much of the game, but they stayed within five until the fourth quarter. Kadeem Allen led West Jefferson with 10 points. Erik Hanneman added eight points.
Jesuit (2-1) will play Ehret in the final today at 8 p.m
EHRET 44, MANDEVILLE 43
O.C. Tart made one of two free throws with 18 seconds remaining to give the Patriots (4-0) a one-point lead. On the game's final possession, Mandeville's Zach Adema forced a shot that fell short of the backboard. Mandeville (5-1) took a four-point lead several minutes into the fourth before Ehret took a two-point lead with two minutes remaining with a 6-0 run. Gregory Lewis had two baskets, and Jerremy Coleman had one during the run that put Ehret ahead for good.

Lake Charles Area Report: Sam Houston falls to Iowa, Yellow Jackets to take on Barbe in tourney championship
Sam Houston junior Ryan Adams attempts a lay-up
for the Broncos' in their 82-51 loss to Iowa in the
Cameron State Bank Holiday Classic on Tuesday.
By Mickel PonthieuxSouthwest Daily News
Westlake, La. - The fast paced Iowa Yellow Jackets were too much for the Sam Houston Broncos on Tuesday night in an 82-51 win in the boys’ semifinal game of the Cameron State Bank Holiday Classic at Westlake High School.
The Yellow Jackets started the game strong taking a 9-3 lead early in the first quarter. After a couple of Bronco free throws, Iowa went on a 9-0 run to take an 18-7 lead. Iowa continued to build on their lead to take a 29-17 advantage going into the second quarter.
The Broncos (3-4) started off the second period with a 14-5 run to cut the deficit to three, 34-31. But Iowa didn’t let the game stay close for long picking up four points off two turnovers and another three at the line after a technical foul on Sam Houston to give the Yellow Jackets a ten point lead, 41-31.
The Yellow Jackets closed the first half with a 6-3 run to take a 47-34 lead at halftime. Iowa picked up the pace in the second half to outscore the Broncos 17-8 in the third quarter and 18-8 in the fourth quarter to seal the 82-51 win. Iowa’s Charles Robertson led all scorers with 20 points and Ray Jenkins scored 14 points. Aaron Guillory and Wayne Stansberry each added 10 points for the Yellow Jackets. Kenny Waddell led the Broncos with 12 points and Tanner Stewart and Dylan Champagne scored eight points each.
Iowa moves on the championship game and will play Barbe at 8 p.m. Sam Houston will play in the third place game at 5 p.m. against Westlake.
Barbe 54, Westlake 26
WESTLAKE–A good night on defense was not enough to compensate for a lack luster night offensively for the Westlake Rams in a 54-26 loss on Tuesday night in the other semifinal game at the Cameron State Bank Holiday Classic at Westlake High School. The Rams defense was able to keep the game close at half by an 18-10 score.
The Bucs turned up the heat in the second half with a 15 point third quarter and a 21 point fourth to take the 54-26 victory. “We kept it close but just had a poor offensive night,” Westlake head coach Doug Morris said. “The defense was good but Barbe eventually started to turn up the pressure and hit some shots in the fourth quarter.”
Christian Weber led the Rams with nine points while Barbe’s Dustin Johnson led all scorers with 17 points. Barbe moves on the championship game against Iowa while the Rams will battle for third place against Sam Houston at 5 p.m.
Welsh 72, Vinton 63
WESTLAKE–Despite trailing 28-8 after the first quarter, the Vinton Lions fought back but ran out of time in a 72-63 loss to the Welsh Greyhounds on Tuesday night in the consolation bracket of the Cameron State Bank Holiday Classic. The Greyhounds jumped on the Lions early, but the Lions didn’t lie down.
“They jumped on us early and we reverted back to some things that we did last year,” said Vinton head coach Jason Tharp. “But we fought back and we chipped away at their lead.”
The Lions continued to fight to stay in the game and in the fourth quarter outscored Welsh 27-18 led by Jarrod Anderson. Anderson hit some big three’s for Vinton and went 7-of-8 in the fourth quarter. But Vinton just ran out of time. “I was proud of them that they stuck with it,” Tharp said. Anderson led the Lions with 26 points while Doc Roberts scored 15 for Vinton. The Lions will return to action on December 1st when they will travel to Bell City.
Welsh will take on Rospine in the CSB Holiday Classic consolation final at 2 p.m.
