Salmen defeats Slidell 60-45

By Pat Mashburn
Contributing writer

There was no need for the Salmen Coach Jay Carlin to check the pulse of his team to realize they were alive after a less than spectacular beginning.

The Spartans responded with purpose in a 60-45 rout of Slidell on Thursday after having trailed by five points in the early going.

"We were getting some good looks at the basketball," Carlan said. "Our shots just weren't falling."
The Spartans(6-4) then picked up the pace against Slidell (5-4), hitting 74 percent from the field after shooting 40 percent in the first quarter.

T.J. Price paced Salmen with 21 points. Teammate Khari Price scored 12 points, and Jamal Robinson added 10.

Nicolas Abrams and Tevin Parker each scored 11 for Slidell.

"We didn't do a good job," said Slidell Coach Dale Chimento, who placed the team's performance on himself and his staff. "We have to prepare better."

The third and fourth quaters were a reversal of fortunes for Slidell. It was held to one field goal in 11 minutes, and Salmen went on a 18-2 run for a 59-41 margin.

The Tigers' Tevin Parker kept the momentum going with a three-point play to open the second half. Thomas Jones put Salmen ahead for the first time at 33-32 with four minutes in the third quarter, as the Spartans scored the next 14 points for a 41-32 advantage.

It was hard to find fault with the Tigers' effort in the first half, as they hit 57 percent of their shots. Their defense held Salmen scoreless for just over three minutes, opening a 9-4 lead. However, a 3-pointer by Khari Price with two minutes remaining in the first quarter cut Slidell's lead to 9-7.

After trading 3-pointers to begin the second quarter, Slidell scored eight consecutive points for a 26-15 margin -- the largest of the first half. Price scored the Spartans' last 11 points to chip away at Slidell's lead and cut the deficit to 29-26.

"We just got some kids back from football, and there not yet in basketball shape," Carlin said. "But this was a good indication they were ahead of the game. I was proud of the way we pulled ourselves together."

Tigers too much for Braves on second day of HLB Tournament

Jerrod Brown Led Terrebonne with 28 points last night
Steve Holley

Sports Correspondent

GRAY — Terrebonne's offense was too much for H.L. Bourgeois to slow down.

Terrebonne (3-5) used a big first quarter to sprint to a 42-32 halftime lead en route to a 67-54 victory over the Braves (0-10) at H.L. Bourgeois' Casey Kozminski Memorial Tournament on Thursday.

Jerrod Brown led Terrebonne with a game-high 28 points and Devon Austin added 14 as the two District 8-5A rivals met for the first time this season, this time being a nondistrict contest.

“This was probably the first game all season where our offense was really flowing and we took our time,” Terrebonne coach Byron McPherson said. “We (executed) what we practiced every day, and you saw the results of it.”

The result was an explosive first quarter that had the Braves playing catch-up the entire game. The Tigers led by as many as 15 in the first half and 16 in the final period.

“When we take our time and move the ball, we're going to get any shot we want,” McPherson said. “Brown and Austin have been carrying us all night offensively and (Thursday was) no different than any game we've played this season. They are the leaders of the team, so I expect them to carry the offense.”

Deonte Ward and Dillon Anderson carried the Braves' offense with 20 points each. Phil Jackson added 13 points for H.L. Bourgeois, which remained winless.

“We didn't get back in transition defense in that first quarter,” Braves' coach Andrew Caillouet said. “I don't think (Terrebonne) got much in transition after the first quarter, and from that point on it was a good game. We probably cut the (deficit) from six minutes in the first quarter until (nearly) the end of the game.

“If you start differently, it's a different game.”

SOUTH TERREBONNE 62,
RABOUIN 39 (BOYS)

At Gray, the Gators (4-4) had three players in double figures in the victory Thursday at the H.L. Bourgeois Tournament. Trey Smith led South Terrebonne with 19 points, Joe Thompson had 14 and Dalvin Richardson added 10.

E.D. WHITE CATHOLIC 49,
EAST IBERVILLE 47 0T (BOYS)

At the Episcopal of Baton Rouge tournament, the Cardinals rebounded from a 19-14 halftime deficit to send the game to overtime, where the outscored East Iberville 7-5 for the win. It was E.D. White's first game with its full team after the football team's playoff run to the semifinals. Charlie Bourgeois led the Cardinals with 14 points, 13 of which came in the second half and overtime.

THIBODAUX 62,
BOGALUSA 43 (BOYS)

At the Ponchatoula Tournament, the Tigers (7-2) got 19 points from Shavon Coleman, 13 points from Kevin Cox and eight points from Alvin George. They led 19-3 after the first quarter, 25-16 at halftime 36-34 at the end of the third quarter and will play in the winner's bracket tonight.

SOUTH LAFOURCHE 54,
WEST ST. JOHN 28 (BOYS)

At Baldwin, the Tarpons got 18 points from Justin Lasseigne, 11 points from Caden Cheramie and six points from Bruce Lee in moving to 5-3 on the season. South Lafourche led 15-3 after the first quarter, 28-5 at halftime and 41-13 at the end of the third quarter.

CENTRAL LAFOURCHE 69,
INDEPENDENCE 58 (BOYS)

At the Walker Tournament, the Trojans improved to 7-4 and got 15 points from Carr Coleman and 12 points from Davon Anderson. Central Lafourche led 21-15 after the first quarter, 37-30 at halftime and 55-36 at the end of the third quarter and will play next in the event at 3:30 Friday.

Gray leads furious W-M attack with 43 points

By Troy LaFleur

SPECIAL TO THE AMERICAN PRESS

MOSS BLUFF — The Sam Houston Battle at the Bluff tournament tipped off in grand style Thursday night with a high-scoring contest between local favorites Washington-Marion and Iowa.

The Yellow Jackets could not match the pace of the Charging Indians, who won 102-80.

W-M guard Josh Gray scored a game-high 43 points, 31 of which came in the first half, to go along with six rebounds and three steals. A majority of his points came from behind the 3-point arc, as he drained seven of 11 3-point attempts.

“Josh finally had a good game. We’ve been waiting for him to break out of his slump and he did all right tonight,” said W-M head coach Albert Hartwell.

The Indians held the lead for almost the entire game, with the lone exception being a 20-second span in which the score was tied at seven during the first quarter. They regained the lead by going on an 18-6 scoring run, and finished the first quarter with a 31-22 lead.

The second quarter was when Gray broke loose, draining all five of his 3-point attempts as W-M took a 57-41 lead at the half.

Despite having a strong night on the boards, the Yellow Jackets (6-4) did not piece together a comeback in the third quarter. W-M (4-1) kept up its fast pace, led by second-half performances from Desharick Guidry and Chris Bell.

Guidry was second on the team with 20 points to go along three blocks and a team-high 13 rebounds. Bell managed 10 points and three assists in the second half as the Indians held a 20-point lead entering the final quarter.

The fourth quarter saw a majority of the W-M reserves seeing playing time, and Iowa’s Ray Jenkins scoring eight of his 12 points, as the Indians closed out the game for their fourth win of the season.

The Yellow Jackets managed to outrebound the Indians 41-37 with Dylan Williams leading the way with 15 boards to go along with his 19 points. Jenkins had 10 rebounds.

Wayne Stansberry led the Yellow Jackets with 24 points.

However, the Yellow Jackets turned the ball over 17 times compared to eight for W-M.

“We’ve been working on getting turnovers a lot in practice,” Hartwell said. “The boys did a good job, they have been practicing hard and working hard and it showed up in the game.”

The Indians look to continue their success with a matchup of the area’s best tonight as they go head-to-head with the LaGrange Gators.

“We just want to come out and play good for the rest of the tournament,” Hartwell said. “We just want to do our best and try to get better because we’re still young and we really need to find our identity.”

Shreveport Area Roundup: Southwood slips past Loyola at Northwood Tourney

Mike Davis Led Southwood with 21 points
By Jason Pugh • jpugh@gannett.com
Shreveport Times

Seniority paid off for Southwood on Thursday afternoon.

More specifically, seniority in the backcourt. The Cowboys needed every one of the points and steals Mike Davis, Dean Johns and Jeff Latin provided in a 63-52 victory over Loyola in the first round of the Specialists Health System Classic at Northwood.

The senior trio combined for 44 of Southwood's points on offense while continually harassing the younger Flyers guards into turnovers throughout the game.

"We did a good job of getting some mistakes," Southwood coach Norm Picou said. "We had two chances to put them away and they fought back in it. At the end of the game, our three senior guards' maturity and leadership stepped up and carried us through."

Southwood improved to 4-2 and will face Byrd tonight.

The Cowboys' victory didn't come without some trepidation.

After taking a 10-point lead after the first quarter, Southwood coughed it up as Loyola (2-7) ripped off a 15-2 run over the first 6:21 of the quarter.

"We played good basketball," Loyola head coach Willie Jackson said. "They kept that relentless pressure on us and we're young. We made a lot of mistakes by turning the basketball over. You combine the turnovers with the missed free throws and it's a double-edged sword. It made it diffcult for us to get out of that hole, but we had our chances."

Once again, however, it was Davis, who tied Loyola's Trevino Martin for top scoring honors with 21 points, who brought the Cowboys back.

Davis scored the final five points of the quarter, twice hitting his trademark floater in the lane as the Cowboys took a two-point lead — and the momentum — into halftime.

"I just know, if I go hard to the basket, there aren't that many that can stop me," Davis said. "I love (shooting the floater). Love it."

The Flyers fashioned another comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring 10 of the quarter's first 13 points to cut Southwood's lead to four points with 3:08 to play when Martin hit a jumper from the free-throw line.

The Cowboys, however, took advantage of two more missed Flyers free throws in the final 90 seconds to put the game away. Latin, who finished with 11 points, and Davis combined to hit eight of nine free throws in the final 1:26 of the game.

The Cowboys' late accuracy at the line made up for a Southwood rarity. The Cowboys were held scoreless from the 3-point line, an unusual occurrence under Picou, who likes his team to push the tempo.

"The thing we told our guys a sign of a team that's maturing is when you play bad and you still win a game," Picou said. "Loyola did a great job. What I was proud of was we were able to hang on and get the victory."

Another sign of the Cowboys' increased maturity was their listening skills.

Davis echoed his coach's words about how much his team has grown since the 2008-09 season ended in February.

"We work harder in practice now," Davis said. "We didn't used to work hard. We would have lost this type of game (last year). We wouldn't have been able to pull it together."

Southwest Daily News

Sulphur, La. -

The Westlake Rams had to overcome a lot of adversity in their 55-53 win over the Grand Lake Hornets on Thursday in the Hackberry Invitational held at Sulphur Parks and Recreation.

The Hornets opened the fourth quarter with an 8-1 run to take a 44-43 lead, their first since late in the second quarter. Both teams traded baskets through the final period until Grand Lake hit two free throws and a basket to take a 53-50 lead with 26 seconds left in the game.

With six seconds left on the clock, Westlake’s Zak Cahee tied the game with a three from the top of the key. A Hornet foul on a loose ball put Cahee at the line with the chance for the win. The senior hit both shots from the line to give Westlake the 55-53 win.

The Rams opened the game with troubles on the offensive end of the floor while Grand Lake built a 9-0 lead early in the first quarter. Westlake’s shots started to fall mid-way through the opening quarter and trailed 11-6 going into the second quarter.

The Rams’ offense continued to improve in the second quarter and took the lead with under four minutes left in the half. Westlake led 24-22 at halftime.

Grand Lake’s Jordan Hebert scored a game-high 29 points for the Hornets while Sam Richard added 13 points.

Chase Fisher led Westlake with 18 points and Cahee added 16 points, all in the second half.

The Rams will take on Starks in the championship game on Saturday at 12:40 p.m. at SPAR.

The Purple Knights had a nine-point lead at the start of the fourth before Brother Martin cut the lead to six on a three-point play by Ryan Berger on its first possession of the quarter.

The Crusaders then came to within five with 4:53 remaining after a free throw from Schane Rillieux. But St. Augustine soon regained control, pushing its lead to 10 with 2:09 remaining after a three-point play from Sydie London and a basket from Brandon Lain.

St. Augustine Coach Clifford Barthe said his team settled for too many jump shots and didn't drive to the basket enough. During the fourth quarter, Barthe emphasized going to the basket and defending well.

The Crusaders' Patrick Swilling led all scorers with 36 points. He was 9-for-17 from behind the 3-point line.

"We needed to pick him up further out," Barthe said.

London finished with 21 points to lead the Purple Knights. Eldridge Moore added 14. Javan Felix had 13.

It took an extra period, but Rummel hit enough free throws Thursday to prevail 51-46 over Country Day in the quarterfinals of the Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Tournament at the Raiders' gym.

Heading into the extra period tied at 45, both teams failed to hit a field goal, but the Raiders knocked down six free throws in overtime. Hunter Barocco hit the game-sealing charity shots with 11 seconds to play.

But it was free-throw shooting that nearly cost the Raiders the game. Leading 37-30 after three quarters, the Cajuns outscored Rummel 15-8 in the final period to tie the score. The comeback was keyed by two missed free throws, both on the front ends of one-and-ones.

"We played sloppy tonight, but we're missing four guys from football, and some of them are good free-throw shooters," Rummel Coach Troy Holley said.

"Our free-throw shooting almost cost us in the fourth quarter, but these guys are real resilient. We hit our free throws at the end, and I'm proud of them."

Country Day's Matt Derenbecker led all scorers with 28 but struggled from 3-point range, going 4-of-12.

Casey Webb led Rummel with 19 points. Barocco chipped in 16 points.

Rummel opened on a 7-0 run before Country Day responded with a 7-0 run in the second quarter. The Raiders held a 21-20 halftime lead.
